Basilic Fly Studio recently extended its support to the Schieffelin Institute of Health Research & Leprosy Centre in Karigiri, Vellore, through the donation of over 50 beds and wheelchairs. This contribution is aimed at strengthening the institute’s patient care infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for individuals undergoing treatment and rehabilitation for leprosy.
Established in 1955, the Schieffelin Institute has long been recognized as one of India’s leading centers dedicated to leprosy treatment, research, and rehabilitation. As part of this initiative, CSR team from Basilic Fly Studio visited the institute to personally hand over the equipment and engage with its operations. The visit provided valuable insights into the comprehensive approach adopted by the institute one that goes beyond medical treatment to address the broader social and economic challenges faced by patients. Through an interactive session, the institute’s leadership shared detailed knowledge about modern treatment protocols, including Multi-Drug Therapy, and highlighted ongoing efforts to eliminate misconceptions surrounding the disease.
One of the most impactful aspects of the visit was witnessing the institute’s focus on rehabilitation and patient empowerment. Facilities such as the leather footwear unit and the prosthetic limb workshop stood out as exemplary models of integrated care. These initiatives not only equip patients with vocational skills but also enable them to earn a livelihood with dignity. At the same time, they produce essential therapeutic products, including protective footwear for patients with reduced sensation and customized prosthetic limbs for those affected by disability.
The donation of beds and wheelchairs directly addresses essential needs within the institute. Adequate bedding plays a crucial role in patient recovery by preventing complications such as pressure injuries, while wheelchairs significantly improve mobility and independence. Together, these resources support patients in actively participating in treatment, rehabilitation programs, and skill development activities, thereby contributing to better overall outcomes. Along side Interactions with patients and healthcare professionals offered a deeper understanding of the persistent challenges associated with leprosy.
This initiative reflects Basilic Fly Studio’s broader approach to contributing meaningfully to society. The organization recognizes that corporate responsibility extends beyond financial performance to include active participation in addressing pressing social concerns. By supporting institutions that work at the grassroots level, such efforts help create sustainable and measurable impact.
Equally significant was the learning experience for the visiting team. The exposure to real-world challenges, coupled with direct interaction with patients and caregivers, fostered greater awareness and empathy. It also sparked interest among employees to remain engaged and explore further opportunities to support similar causes in the future.
Basilic Fly Studio continues to focus on initiatives that create tangible value for communities, particularly in areas where support can drive long-term change. Contributions such as this not only strengthen healthcare institutions but also reinforce the importance of collective action in addressing public health challenges.
