Untold VFX: Crafting Worlds Beyond Imagination with Pixels and Magic

Movies and Visual Effects. They go together like rain and water, bow and arrow, milk and sugar. We can’t see one without the other. The inception of Visual Effects (VFX) in cinema revolutionized the way stories are told. Over the years, VFX has evolved from being a tool used solely in science fiction and fantasy movies to becoming an integral part of storytelling across genres. As the legendary filmmaker George Lucas sums it up, â€The technology keeps moving forward, which makes it easier for the artists to tell their stories and paint the pictures they want.†Let’s explore the captivating world of VFX and understand its significance in cinematic artistry. Dreams into Realties Imagine you are a director and your story involve prehistoric beasts, black holes, or characters with superpowers. How do you capture them? VFX is the answer! At its core, filmmaking is an art of illusion. A story that exists only in words and imagination must be brought to life on screen, and this transformation demands more than just camera work and actors’ performances. Enter VFX – a bridge between imagination and reality. When the script demands the impossible or when budget constraints hinder practical on-set execution, VFX studios step in to make the impossible possible. They help directors preserve the narrative flow without compromising the integrity of the story. Visual Effects (VFX) offers an opportunity to bring to life intricate action sequences, unconventional perspectives, and diverse visual styles that were once beyond the boundaries of practicality. These digital marvels empower directors to manifest their creative visions, transforming mere scripts into visual treats. Crafting worlds that captivate More than problem-solving, VFX unlocks the doors to boundless creativity, enabling storytellers to experiment with different visual styles and aesthetics. From the landscapes of Middle-earth in “The Lord of the Rings†to the digitally enhanced world of Iron City in â€Alita: Battle Angel†(the movie we worked on!), VFX lets filmmakers craft worlds that captivate and enthrall. Best sequences – Examples “Skinny Steve†in the movie “Captain America†(2011) The seamless execution of the visual effects, which transformed the tall and athletic Chris Evans into a frail 90-pound individual for the initial portion of the movie is a tricky work for VFX companies. The journey began with the casting of Chris Evans, who, while already an accomplished actor, was not yet a widely recognized superstar. This absence of a predetermined reason for the audience to reject the portrayal of a young, slight, and underweight soldier with a strong heart makes the eventual transition to Chris Evans’ real-world physique all the more striking and impactful. “Alien†confrontation in Sci-fi/Horror â€Annihilation†The climatic alien confrontation in Alex Garland’s 2018 film “Annihilation†is another wonder. Many VFX houses struggle for such visuals. While not ground-breaking in terms of technical visual effects, this sequence was incredibly effective in terms of its storytelling and character development. The encounter with the “alien†was truly mesmerizing. A double-edged sword As with any powerful tool, VFX is a double-edged sword. Although it has the power to achieve larger-than-life visual elements, the audience can feel even a minor flaw.  Making visuals appear “real†is way harder than it sounds. Failing this, some movies even become the most-shared meme templates. A seamless blend with live-action elements is crucial to prevent viewers from feeling disbelief. The art lies not only in creating the impossible but also in making the impossible feel undeniably real. To achieve this, most filmmakers opt for top VFX studios in India. Final Words From humble beginnings in the early 1900s to the sprawling digital landscapes of today, VFX has grown into an essential tool that empowers filmmakers to turn their visions into reality. Today, it is a tool that for any narrative, whether it’s a heart-warming drama, a nail-biting thriller, or a historical epic. This adaptability speaks volumes about the role of VFX in enhancing storytelling, irrespective of the genre. In short, VFX studios create worlds, characters, and moments that leave great impressions. So, the next time you watch a movie, remember the dance between imagination and technology that brings the impossible to life.

Behind the Scenes: Crafting VFX for Blockbusters Like Avatar: The Way of Water and Spider-Man: No Way Home

In the blockbuster movie universe, visual effects (VFX) are not an afterthought—but a key component that takes the story to the next level, immerses audiences, and gives fantastical worlds existence. Force behind some of the most resplendently glorious films in recent history such as Avatar: The Way of Water and Spider-Man: No Way Home is Basilic Fly Studio (BFS), a VFX behemoth whose talent has become synonymous with cinematic grandeur. What they do in such colossus productions is reflective of their passion for quality, inventiveness, and technology that never sleeps. The Genesis of Basilic Fly Studio Established in 2012, Basilic Fly Studio (BFS) began a small VFX studio in Chennai, India. With just a few dedicated artists and engineers, the studio began the journey of establishing its name in the constantly rising visual effects industry. BFS was conceived out of a common dream: to design superior visual experiences through a combination of technical expertise and innovation. Initially, their work on their project in the field spoke for itself, but it was their resolve and perseverance that enabled them to achieve international heights. From the time it was established, BFS’s growth trend has been nothing less than miraculous. From a small team of extremely gifted artists, the studio grew into a mighty battalion of more than 500 experts. Currently, it has bases in several different locations across the world, such as Pune, London, and Vancouver, all with cutting-edge studios that specialize in different stages of VFX work. From its modest roots to the top of global recognition, BFS’s journey is that of commitment, constant learning, and an forever unsatisfied quest for perfection. Since their work soon caught the attention of Hollywood studios, BFS quickly emerged as one of the leading go-to VFX partners with some of the biggest players in the industry. Immersing in Pandora: Avatar: The Way of Water When James Cameron released Avatar back in 2009, it revolutionized the face of film visual effects, especially with regard to 3D and motion capture technology. Fifteen years down the line, Avatar: The Way of Water did it again, thanks to its pioneering underwater shots and motion-capturing, awe-inspiringly realistic rendering of Pandora’s alien environments. As a principal partner at this trailblazing film, BFS created some of the most iconic visuals of today’s cinema. Underwater Simulations: Crafting Realistic Water Dynamics One of the things about Avatar: The Way of Water was its water world, powered by advanced fluid dynamics and stunning oceanic landscapes. For BFS, the technical challenge of simulating water was less about science—so much as a piece of art. The studio employed cutting-edge fluid simulation technology to produce realistic water behavior responding to environment and characters. Whatever was the soft ebb and flow of the sea or the turbulent motion of sea monsters, BFS’s team worked round the clock to make sure that every ounce of water added up to the movie’s atmospheric input. It was not a straightforward task. The studio duplicated the physics of water—its flow, reflection, refraction, and diffusion of light—and the added challenge of doing so as realistically as humanly possible. Using advanced software such as Autodesk Maya and SideFX Houdini, BFS was able to create visually spectacular and physically realistic underwater simulations, allowing filmic underwater action to achieve an unprecedented level of realism. Creature Design and Animation: Bringing Pandora’s Fauna to Life Of the most enchanting aspects of Avatar: The Way of Water was Pandora’s creatures’ realism and diversity. BFS’s role in bringing these monsters to life wasn’t just in concept design but ensuring that they moved and interacted with their environment in a realistic way. The studio’s best animators poured hours into each animal—great and small—and worked tirelessly in observing how living animals move and act so they could make the movement of every creature look genuine. For example, BFS delivered organic, smooth animation for the creatures that inhabit the oceans of Pandora and the otherworldly fauna that inhabit its dense forests. Their detail gave these creatures an organic look to integrate seamlessly with the live-action footage and the human characters themselves in a natural way. BFS’s creature work was key in creating Pandora’s world, immersing and filled with wonder. Environmental Effects: Crafting the Atmosphere of Pandora BFS was also extensively used for the visual effects of Avatar: The Way of Water. That included the dynamic weather system, foliage dynamics, and atmospheric lighting that defined Pandora’s otherworldly environment. With utmost care, the team simulated the way wind passed through the dense alien forests, how bioluminescent plants reacted to light, and the floating clouds that rested on the horizon. These effects of the environment added an extra layer of richness and verisimilitude to the film, to such an extent that every frame appeared to be a living environment. Their integrating these effects into the final movie required exact compositing, where each of the visual elements—the live-action photograph, the CGI models, and the environment effects—is composed together in synchronization. BFS’s know-how and skill in business made the end product coherent, where each piece cooperated together to completely surround the viewer within Pandora. Web-Slinging into Multiverses: Spider-Man: No Way Home Spider-Man: No Way Home was a titanic film for the Marvel Cinematic Universe not merely because it was bringing together distinct generations of actors playing Spider-Man, but in the way in which it embraced the multiverse idea with eye-popping aesthetic splendor. BFS’s contributions to the existence of such an achievement as the film turned out to be crucial in the convergence of the multiple Spider-Man realities. Their task was to provide enormous areas of expertise, ranging from creating magical portal effects to integrating CGI characters into live-action movies. Portal Effects: A Window Into the Multiverse Maybe the most enduring aspect of Spider-Man: No Way Home was its use of magical portals through which characters would journey from parallel universes. BFS also created and animated the portals, which not only would have to look incredible but would need to have some idea of what type of tone the

From Chennai to the World: The Global Journey of Basilic Fly Studio

In the fast-paced world of visual effects (VFX), achievement of one has been a hallmark of vision, determination, and the power of imagination—Basilic Fly Studio (BFS). Life began for BFS in a humble Chennai office in the year 2013. Today, it is a VFX industry world giant, creating fantastic visual effects for some of the world’s largest blockbuster films and popular television shows. This blog will guide you through the incredible journey of BFS, from humble beginnings to market leadership in the international VFX industry. Humble Beginnings: The Birth of a Vision The journey of Basilic Fly Studio started with its founder, Balakrishnan R, an entrepreneur who saw the untapped potential of the Indian VFX industry. Balakrishnan and a team of 5-6 artists began in Chennai in 2013 with the vision of establishing a VFX company that could provide world-class quality at competitive costs. While the Indian VFX industry was yet to make its debut, BFS was one of the early movers who had the vision to play at the global level. Basilic Fly, the very name, was inspired by the humble honeybee colony’s collaborative, working-class attitude. That was made the motto of the studio’s modus vivendi—depending on collaboration, imagination, and tireless commitment to provide top-of-the-line visual effects. The initial period was not easy. It was difficult to secure assignments, and BFS had to fight it out with the big guns of the international market. But the dedication of the team to work and attention to excellence began to yield results. BFS soon got their first major job with the production of “The Legend of Hercules” in 2014, where the studio created more than 350 VFX shots within a span of three months. This was a watershed project for BFS, showcasing their capability to produce intricate visual effects on short notice, the start of a new epoch for the company. Overcoming Early Challenges and Securing Major Projects BFS’s initial years as a start-up business were not serene with issues common in start-up companies. As with all start-up enterprises, keeping cash coming, recruiting skill, and fighting the issue of deadlines were everyday issues. Nonetheless, the will of the team to deliver only finest quality work made it stand out among other startups within the industry. With the world’s hunger for high-quality VFX exploding, BFS subsequently witnessed expanding opportunities in Hollywood as well as abroad. BFS’s greatest moment was when it started collaborating with some of the largest film studios and streaming companies globally. The studio’s early forays into the global market started with The Legend of Hercules and kept accelerating with massive Hollywood productions like Avengers: Endgame and Avatar: The Way of Water. These partnerships provided BFS with priceless experience in the most ambitious VFX productions, enabling them to expand voluminously in terms of size and expertise. The studio’s reputation for delivering the best in VFX in stringent deadlines quickly caught the eye of the likes of Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and the rest of the streaming giants, where the requirement for digital content—and by association, top-drawer VFX—was reaching dizzying levels. With the increased faith placed upon it, BFS diversified its kitty with some work on such world-acclaimed productions as Stranger Things and The Mandalorian. Scaling Up: A Global Presence and Strategic Expansion With BFS rising to fame for its quality visual effects, the company started growing to cope with the increasing demand. The next big expansion in their careers was an enlargement of their talent pool and infrastructure. BFS grew its operations in order to handle its expanding workload with new offices in Pune, London, and Vancouver. These sites enabled BFS to draw from pools of talent that were different from one another and provide localized services while maintaining the high quality standards that had established them as a global player. This capability to offer world-class VFX solutions at competitive rates became BFS’s unique strength. While existing players were engaged in sustaining high costs during this period, BFS’s international expansion enabled them to offer low-cost solutions without compromising on quality. This helped them emerge as the preferred partner for customers globally. Technological advancement was another major driver of BFS’s growth. The studio adopted the newest VFX technologies, ranging from AI tools to real-time rendering engines, to keep BFS at the top. Through spending on advanced technology, BFS was able to take on more complex projects while maximizing efficiency. Strategic Acquisition and Strengthening of Global Influence In 2022, BFS made a huge leap towards world domination by acquiring a 70% stake in Emmy and BAFTA-winning VFX house One of Us Limited. The acquisition brought more than 900 top artists into their fold, further strengthening their capability and increasing their footprint in Europe, specifically London and Paris—two of the world’s top creative centers. With the acquisition of One of Us, BFS got access to even greater industry experience and spread its wings into more diverse services such as television and advertising. The acquisition was a strategic buy that was BFS’s increasing interest in the VFX sector. Building up in Europe and other creative hubs further boosted the studio’s capability to provide high-grade VFX services to blue chip clients and helped them extend their international partnerships. Groundbreaking Work on Major Film Projects During its career, BFS has contributed numerous high-profile VFX-heavy films and TV shows. Most prominently, work on Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) demonstrated their capability to bring together parallel universes and complex VFX sequences. The success of the film was partly attributed to BFS’s capability to seamlessly integrate different Spider-Man realities, a task of enormous scale that called for a pool of experts and cutting-edge techniques. BFS’s work on the Avatar franchise also helped to solidify its international reputation. With Avatar: The Way of Water, BFS developed challenging underwater VFX sequences that demanded innovative simulation techniques. The VFX had to capture the movement and environment of underwater animals in a manner previously believed impossible. BFS’s capability to deliver such detailed work expanded the limits of what could be done in

We’re proud to share the success of a meaningful initiative aimed at empowering the next generation of young women with knowledge, care, and protection. In collaboration with local partners, we recently conducted an HPV Vaccination Camp at Kasuva Village, where 70 students received the HPV vaccine—a vital step in preventing cervical cancer and promoting long-term health. But our efforts didn’t stop there. Understanding the importance of holistic health education, we also addressed a topic often overlooked—menstrual hygiene. Sanitary pads were distributed to 70 girl students, accompanied by an informative session on menstrual care, helping normalize conversations around periods and equipping students with essential knowledge and resources. To ensure our awareness session had a lasting impact, we conducted pre- and post-session questionnaires. This allowed us to measure students’ understanding of HPV, cervical cancer, and menstrual hygiene, and highlighted the value of education in transforming awareness into action. This initiative is more than a one-time event—it’s a reflection of our ongoing dedication to supporting health, hygiene, and empowerment in underserved communities. By equipping young women with the knowledge and tools they need, we’re investing in a healthier, stronger future. Together, we champion change—one vaccine, one conversation, one step at a time.

Beyond Boundaries: Residing and Thriving with Basilic Fly

Basilic Fly Studio is a hub of artists from many cities in India. We love the diversity and take great measures to preserve it. This ‘Far from Home’ series covers one such artist, shedding light on their experiences staying away from their hometown. In this edition, we interviewed Kuldeep Kumar, a junior compositor who comes from Agra, Uttar Pradesh. He started as a Jr. Paint Artist who worked as a Sr. Mentor and Trainer before taking up compositing. Now, let’s dive into a quick chat with Kuldeep to witness his adaptation to working away from home. 1. When did you come to Chennai? 2016. So, it’s been 7 years now. Before Chennai, I worked in Chandigarh. There, I previously worked as a stereo roto artist. 2. Favorite South-Indian food? Dosa and chutney. 3. Which Tamil word do you use most often? Machi. 4. Have you traveled anywhere in and around Tamil Nadu? Yes! So many places – Kanyakumari, Pondicherry, Rameswaram, and Mamallapuram. Each place is unique, and I love them all. 5. What’s the one thing that made you suffer in the initial days? It took some time for me to adapt to the food. Now, I cook my own food. However, compared to a few years ago, I could find many North-Indian restaurants now. 6. What do you love the most about Chennai? People are very welcoming. Tamilians are some of the most loving and compassionate people I have come across. Also, I feel that Chennai is one of the safest cities in India. 7. Have you had any challenging situations? Yes, I recall a few. I managed all of them quite easily. But, the Covid-19 pandemic was difficult. Thankfully, BFS’ support got me through. I was given the WFH option for three months and got all the necessary facilities. My supervisors were helpful as well. Since there was no option to travel or spend time with my friends, I thought a lot about home. However, my wish to go back home was fulfilled during the second pandemic. During uncertain times, while manpower rationalizing took place across industries, management continued to leverage the financial and mental strength of BFSians. 8. Would you advise an aspiring VFX artist to take up a job and reside in a different city? Absolutely, they need to grab a good opportunity whenever presented. You have to take risks. Yes, it can be hard at times, but the rewards are worth it. I’ve grown in BFS due to my choice to move to another city. 9. Any habits/hobbies you developed in Chennai? Chennai is full of temples. You name any god, and he/she would have a temple here. I love to explore them, especially with my Tamil friends. I tag along with them, and sometimes they even act as a tour guide. 10. Which is your favorite movie you recently worked on? I would pick ‘’Dumb Money’’ for which my name was included in the post-credits. This was achieved in collaboration with my Pune colleagues. 11. List any two projects where you worked on the challenges with ease. 1. In “Dumb Money,” split-screen compositing and retime artifacts took meticulous effort and dexterity to match the edit references, which turned out well as per the client’s expectations. 2. In another project, a mountain needed to be added to the live plate as a background. It was received as a wide-angle, well-lit shot with numerous trees and branches, making it challenging to blend with the mountains. This was resolved using collaborative discussions and executed with advanced compositing techniques. 12. To conclude, tell us what you like about Basilic Fly Studio. I’ve been with BFS for more than 7 years now. There has been multiple positives substantiating in my tenure, such as upskilling of creative abilities, friendly- fun work culture, and enjoyed mentoring the senior resources, have made my journey a success here.
