Gateway 2026: Basilic Fly Stuido presents at Vibrant Visual Media Symposium in Anna University

On February 11, 2026, Anna University – Department of Media Sciences hosted Gateway 2026, a symposium themed around visual media. With students participating from various universities and colleges across Chennai, the event created an energetic space for learning, interaction, and industry exposure, bringing together young creators who are actively exploring the future of media and storytelling. Throughout the symposium, students engaged in discussions and sessions that reflected how visual communication is evolving today where creativity, technology, and audience experience are deeply connected. The overall atmosphere was enthusiastic and curious, with participants using the event as an opportunity not only to learn, but also to connect with peers, exchange ideas, and understand where the industry is headed. A Key Highlight: VFX + AI Workshop by Basilic Fly Studio One of the standout moments of Gateway 2026 was the VFX workshop featuring Artificial Intelligence, presented by Basilic Fly Studio. The session was led by Zameer Hussain, Chief Operating Officer & Executive Global EVP and Ram Kumar, Senior Pipeline Developer, who brought an industry-grounded perspective into the academic setting. Basilic Fly Studio_Presentation: The workshop focused on how AI is being integrated into modern VFX workflows in a way that supports artists and improves production efficiency. Rather than treating AI as a buzzword, the session positioned it as a practical tool, useful for speeding up repetitive tasks, improving consistency, and helping teams work smarter while keeping creative decision-making with the artist. Understanding Gen AI vs Non-Gen AI: A valuable part of the session was the explanation of the difference between Generative AI and Non-Generative AI, shared in a student-friendly and easy-to-follow way: Generative AI (Gen AI) was explained as AI that can create new outputs, such as generating new images or visual variations based on prompts or references. Non-Generative AI (Non-Gen AI) was explained as AI that does not create new visuals, but instead supports workflows through automation, organization, analysis, and production assistance helping teams manage complexity and move faster. This clarity helped students understand where AI fits realistically inside a VFX pipeline and why knowing the difference matters when entering the industry. How the session went Overall, the workshop was engaging, practical, and relevant to the audience. Students were able to connect the discussion to real-world production scenarios and gain a stronger sense of how VFX studios work today. The session also encouraged students to think beyond tools towards skills like adaptability, workflow understanding, and creative problem-solving, which will become even more important as technology continues to evolve. Closing Note Gateway 2026 concluded on a positive and inspiring note, giving students both motivation and direction. The symposium successfully created a bridge between academic learning and industry reality, especially through sessions like the Basilic Fly Studio workshop, which highlighted how visual media, VFX, and AI are coming together to shape the next generation of storytellers.Sincere Thanks We extend our sincere thanks to the faculty and team who made this symposium possible: Shree Jyothi (Assistant Professor), Soniya (2D & VFX), Uma Maheshwari (Associate Professor), Lavanya (Assistant Professor), Dinesh (Assistant Professor), and Velayudham (Assistant Professor) and a special thank you to the students of the Department of Media Sciences for their enthusiastic participation, coordination, and warm engagement throughout the event.

This year’s summit was themed “The AI Era – Bridging Creativity & Commerce”, reflecting how artificial intelligence and new technologies are reshaping content creation, production workflows and business models. In his inaugural address, Sanjay Jaju, Secretary, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, spoke about India’s rich storytelling legacy and reminded the audience that, despite this strength, India currently holds only around 2% of the global media and entertainment market. The clear message was that the industry now has a chance to turn creative potential into globally recognised work – provided it embraces technology, builds skills at scale and focuses on long-term growth. One of the key announcements at the summit was the launch of the Global Media & Entertainment Investor Meet in collaboration with WAVES Bazaar, hosted as part of the 12th CII Big Picture Summit. This initiative is designed to connect international investors with high-potential Indian companies across film, streaming, animation, gaming and VFX through curated one-on-one meetings and a structured marketplace. For VFX studios in India, including Basilic Fly Studio, this kind of platform signals a strong intent to organise the ecosystem, bring in global capital and open more doors for large-scale, high-quality projects. Industry updates at the summit also highlighted a growing focus on specialised institutes and skilling initiatives to address talent gaps across film, OTT and AVGC, reinforcing how important well-trained artists and technicians will be in the years ahead. For Basilic Fly Studio, it was encouraging to see VFX and AVGC repeatedly called out as central to India’s media and entertainment growth story. As a VFX studio in India that has grown from a small team into a multi-location setup working on global titles, many of the points discussed from AI-enabled workflows and training pipelines to investor connect and policy support, felt closely connected to the realities we see every day. Being in the room with other VFX companies in India, animation houses and post-production partners also gave us space to listen, exchange ideas and understand how different parts of the ecosystem are preparing for the future. The team will be bringing these insights back into our internal discussions from how we continue to strengthen our pipeline and learning culture for artists, to how we align with the evolving expectations of global clients and partners. As India moves towards a more organised, ambitious and globally visible media and entertainment industry, Basilic Fly Studio will keep focusing on strong visual storytelling, dependable delivery and long-term relationships, contributing in our own way to the growing landscape of VFX companies in India.

Basilic Fly Studio celebrates Shutter Bird’s Oscar qualification

Basilic Fly Studio celebrates Shutter Bird’s Oscar qualification Basilic Fly Studio is proud to celebrate the incredible milestone achieved by Shutter Bird, now officially Oscar-qualified. This recognition marks not only a triumph for the film’s creative vision but also a heartfelt moment of pride for every artist who contributed their craft to bring the story’s visual beauty and emotion to life. A cinematic story that speaks from the soul Directed by Réi (Justin “Réi” Ching), Shutter Bird unfolds as a deeply moving story set in rural California, following two teens, Mia and Ray, who dream of leaving their small town while struggling with family, grief, and the pull of memory. The film captures the fragile tension between loss and hope, grounded in an authentic sense of place. Through its poetic storytelling, delicate cinematography, and emotional intimacy, Shutter Bird reminds us how powerful short films can be when they listen to the human heart. The performances of Isabella Ferreira (Love, Victor) and Dallas Liu (Avatar: The Last Airbender) anchor the narrative with sincerity and vulnerability, creating a world that feels both personal and universal. The artistry behind the frame Basilic Fly Studio is honored to have been a part of Shutter Bird’s creative journey through our visual effects team, whose work seamlessly supported the director’s storytelling vision. Every shot demanded precision, sensitivity, and an understanding of subtle emotion qualities our artists brought with care and dedication. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the VFX artists, compositors, paint and roto specialists, tracking and lighting teams, supervisors, and production coordinators who contributed to the film. Each detail, each frame, and each invisible touch of artistry helped elevate the film’s emotional tone while keeping its natural realism intact. The collaboration between our creative team and the filmmakers was rooted in trust and shared passion. Together, we aimed to preserve the raw soul of the story making that the visual effects served the narrative, rather than overshadowing it. From invisible compositing and delicate environmental cleanup to enhancing cinematic continuity, our team approached the project with both artistic sensitivity and technical precision. A moment of gratitude and pride Becoming Oscar-qualified is a reflection of the dedication and heart of everyone involved—from the director’s vision to the cinematographer’s framing, the editor’s rhythm, the sound designer’s emotion, and the subtle artistry of our VFX team. At Basilic Fly Studio, we believe that storytelling is a collective art form, one where every department, every artist, and every frame matters. To see Shutter Bird reach this global recognition reminds us of why we do what we do: to tell stories that move people, across borders and languages. We thank Réi, Adriana Santos, Adil Chamakh, Dawn Suhyun Shim, Kristin Valentine, and the entire creative crew for trusting us to be part of this journey. Their vision inspired our team to bring their best, frame by frame. To all our artists who contributed to the film, your work shines quietly, but its impact is profound. This milestone belongs to you as much as to the film itself. Looking ahead As Shutter Bird continues its journey through festivals and Academy screenings, we at Basilic Fly Studio stand proud to have played a role in this heartfelt story. Collaborations like these remind us that cinema is not only about spectacle, but about emotion, about what stays with you long after the screen fades to black. Congratulations once again to the director, actors, producers, and every artist behind Shutter Bird. Your passion, creativity, and dedication have truly taken flight. Basilic Fly Studio is honored to have been part of this unforgettable journey and we look forward to seeing where Shutter Bird soars next. Team Basilic Fly Studio

Building Bridges Between Academia and Industry: Loyola College Visit

Chennai, 25th September 2025 – our team from Basilic Fly Studio had the privilege of visiting Loyola College, Chennai, for a session with students from the undergraduate and postgraduate Animation and Computer Science departments. The day unfolded as a rich exchange of ideas, curiosity, and future possibilities for collaboration. The program was led by Mr. Zameer Hussain from Basilic Fly Studio, who guided students through an immersive journey into the world of VFX. The session began with an introduction to the studio, our culture, and our body of work. This opening created the perfect backdrop for what became a lively and interactive morning. The showreel screening was one of the most engaging moments, offering students a glimpse into the creative and technical depth of our projects. The room buzzed with excitement, and the screening naturally flowed into an insightful Q&A session, where students asked thoughtful, career-oriented questions. Their curiosity about the future of VFX and eagerness to understand industry pathways reflected the strong creative aspirations within the group. Beyond the student engagement, there were meaningful discussions with Mr. Charles Durai, Director of Kaushal Kendra at Loyola College, along with Mr. Naveen Kumar and Mr. Tamizh from the faculty team. These conversations revolved around the scope of collaboration between Basilic Fly Studio and Loyola, with a draft Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) already under review. One of the strongest points of alignment was the idea of short-term internships, which would provide students with practical exposure and help them connect academic learning with industry requirements. Loyola College has been actively supporting unprivileged students through its initiatives, and Basilic Fly Studio contributes by offering industry exposure and opportunities that align with this effort. Reflecting on the visit, Mr. Zameer Hussain shared: “It was encouraging to see how curious and engaged the students were throughout the session. Their interest in VFX and willingness to ask questions showed just how ready they are to explore new possibilities.” He also noted: “Initiatives like internships and workshops can make a real difference. They give students a chance to apply what they’ve learned and prepare for the kind of challenges they’ll face in the industry.” The session concluded warmly with a token of thanks and refreshments, but more importantly, with a sense of momentum. The day’s interactions left us with three key reflections: students are deeply enthusiastic about VFX careers, faculty leadership is open to meaningful collaboration, and internships stand out as the most immediate pathway for building bridges between education and industry. As we look ahead, we are excited about the possibilities. With the MOU in progress and plans for internships and workshops on the horizon, this partnership marks the beginning of a journey to nurture future talent and strengthen the ties between academia and the VFX industry.
